In pursuit of the wild Cumberbatch, I started watching Fortysomething yesterday. It was made shortly before Hugh Laurie started House, I think, in 2003, six episodes, all of which he directed. Cumberbatch plays the eldest of his three sons, looking exceedingly youthful and plausibly like the spawn of Hugh Laurie. And it is HILARIOUS. It’s basically about the point in your life when you realize your kids are adults *and* they’re having more sex than you are, and you can’t remember the last time you and your spouse got it on. The whole show is kind of one big GPOY for people of a certain age (which would be me). Plus, everyone is in it: Anna Chancellor is Laurie’s wife, the guy who played Thomas Tallis in The Tudors is the youngest son, and of course Stephen Fry makes a guest appearance. Streaming on Amazon though not a freebie—buy it and you’ll roar.
It’s also got Peter Capaldi, and it’s also on Netflix.
